History of Slot Machines

It’s hard to believe the unbelievable popularity of online slots games today, played by millions of people on the internet wagering millions of pounds everyday.

The first ever slot machine was invented by Charles Fey in San Francisco USA in 1887 who was in fact a mechanic and wanted to come up with something to entertain his customers while their cars were being repaired. That’s when he invented the game machine which was then called the “one-armed bandit”.

His original plan was to invent a poker machine but it proved impossible to automatically pay out winnings for all possible combinations. Instead, his machine had 3 reels with 5 symbols which reduced the number of paying combinations considerably. This early version of the game was called the Liberty Bell which was manufactured by the Mills Novelty Company.

A later version of the similar machine was based on giving out fruit flavoured chewing gums. The widely popular fruit symbols are believed to derive from that version, and hence the term “fruit machines”.

In 1891, Sittman and Pitt from Brooklyn New York developed the first true ancestor of today’s slot machines based on 5 drums holding 50 cards to play poker which turned out to be a hit among bars across the US. The machine didn’t payout any winnings but the winner would get free drinks, cigars and so on. These machines were known to be “adjusted” in order to reduce the chances of winning and increase the odds for the house to win!

Nowadays slot machines have “Random Number Generators” or RNG, which guarantees fairness and accuracy and ensures that the numbers that appear don’t follow any pattern or sequence. A slot machine will have already picked a random number that determines the outcome by the time the player pulls the handle. Even though the reels look like they’re spinning and trying to decide at which number to stop; the outcome is actually long decided.

As soon as slot machines became hugely popular in the early 20th century in the USA, they also became illegal! Today, many US states still ban gambling and playing of slot machines. This, however, never stopped this industry to grow and the money spent on slot machines has never been in decline.

Slot machines as they’re widely called today are also known as “fruit machines” here in Britain, “poker machine” in Australia and “Pachinko” in Japan. Their popularity never faded especially because slot machines are usually very cheap to play, don’t require any specific knowledge or skill and the winnings can be huge.
